McCain Greets Volunteers At Phone Bank Event In Newport Before Attending The Saddleback Church Forum

Newport Beach -- We're the local pool reporter today in the motorcade of Sen. John McCain, following the Republican candidate on his day around Southern California. This is running up to his Saturday night joint appearance at the invitation of author and pastor Rick Warren before the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest with Barack Obama.
The Senator made a morning stop in Newport Beach to do some filming for his campaign in the toney gated community called Big Canyon, where he got out at the Hermitage Lane home of real estate developer John Hagested, the managing director of the Sares Regis Group.
We're told the candidate and the campaign was filming a commercial at the home, which was surrounded by technical equipment trucks all over the neighborhood. And why there? We do know that both Hagested and his wife, Merry, are generous maxed-out donors to his presidential campaign.
McCain later showed up to a Newport Beach parking lot, where about 200 volunteers and 300 supporters were on hand to cheer the Senator and his wife, Cindy, at a local phone bank.
Mrs. McCain, in red, was sporting a big cast on her arm, the result of an injury from an overly enthuastic supporter who shook her hand too hard and revved up an old injury, campaign workers said. She accompanied McCain as he strode through the crowd shaking hands and talking to volunteers.
Andrea Jones with the McCain campaign said that the phone bank was one of 60 statewide at work today to make 100,000 calls on the Senator's behalf. McCain appeared energized, grabbing one volunteer's cell phone at one point to sell himself personally to a voter.
Among the volunteers gathered to meet the Senator -- chanting 'We Want McCain' and bearing signs saying, 'Californians for McCain' -- were a group called the Americans of Faith coalition.
McCain's got some interviews and downtime coming before the big forum at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, which starts at 5 p.m. and will be televised live on CNN and Fox News.
