Galgiani Slashes Funding To Fight Meth
Posted: Monday, August 18, 2008
Despite the fact that meth is the primary drug threat in California and the Central Valley is ground zero for meth production, local Democrat Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani (D - Livingston) voted to cut local law enforcement funding on Sunday night, including money to fight the War on Meth.
Even though she made a campaign pledge to always make public safety a priority, Galgiani voted for Assembly Bill 1781, a Democrat state budget proposal that is opposed by law enforcement groups like the California State Sheriffs' Association, the California Police Chiefs' Association and the California Peace Officers' Association.
By voting in favor of AB 1781, the Democrat budget proposal, Galgiani supported:
-
Cuts to the California Multi-Jurisdictional Methamphetamine Enforcement Team (CAL-MMET) program, which has been successful in fighting meth production and distribution in the Central Valley.
-
Elimination of the Mentally Ill Offender Crime Reduction program, which treats mentally ill offenders.
-
Cuts to the Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) program, which provides money to local law enforcement groups to enhance public safety.
-
Cuts to the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act program, which helps law enforcement combat youth and gang violence.
-
Creation of a new direct discharge parole proposal that puts inmates discharged from prison directly back into communities, without supervision.
Valley residents are on the front lines of the war against meth and have dealt disproportionately with its destructiveness and related crime. Yet, Galgiani voted to strip law enforcement of these key resources.
Hard working Central Valley families sent Cathleen Galgiani to Sacramento the represent them and keep their families safe. Instead, she's putting families at risk and threatening public safety in our neighborhoods, schools and communities.
The Central Valley deserves better.
